Suboxone is a medication used in Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT) programs for opioid addiction. It’s a combination of two active ingredients: buprenorphine and naloxone. This unique treatment approach offers a multifaceted approach to recovery, addressing both the physical and psychological aspects of addiction.

Here’s how each component works and how Suboxone functions overall in treating opioid addiction:

Buprenorphine (Suboxone):

This is a partial opioid agonist, which means it binds to the same receptors in the brain that opioids like heroin, oxycodone, or morphine bind to. However, buprenorphine produces weaker effects compared to full opioid agonists. It helps to reduce cravings and withdrawal symptoms without producing the intense euphoria or “”high”” associated with other opioids. Buprenorphine also has a ceiling effect, meaning that higher doses do not necessarily result in increased effects past a certain point, which can reduce the risk of overdose.

Naloxone:

This is an opioid antagonist, meaning it blocks the effects of opioids by binding to the same receptors in the brain but without activating them. Naloxone is added to Suboxone as a deterrent to misuse. If Suboxone is injected or misused intravenously, the naloxone component can induce withdrawal symptoms in opioid-dependent individuals.   When taken as prescribed, Suboxone helps individuals with opioid addiction by:

  • Reducing cravings: By occupying opioid receptors in the brain, Suboxone can help reduce the intense cravings that often accompany opioid withdrawal and addiction.
  • Alleviating withdrawal symptoms: Suboxone helps to alleviate the physical symptoms of opioid withdrawal, such as nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, muscle aches, and anxiety, allowing individuals to focus on their recovery.
  • Blocking the effects of other opioids: Due to the presence of naloxone, Suboxone can block the effects of other opioids. This reduces the likelihood of relapse because even if a person attempts to use opioids while on Suboxone, they will not experience the desired effects.
  • Stabilizing brain chemistry: Suboxone helps to stabilize brain chemistry, restoring balance to neurotransmitter systems that have been disrupted by chronic opioid use.

INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM FOR ALCOHOL & DRUG ABUSE

The Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) for alcohol & drug abuse is a comprehensive treatment program that offers therapeutic support while allowing individuals to maintain their daily responsibilities. It includes group therapy, individual counseling, family involvement, and education about the disease of addiction, all designed to help the person overcome their alcohol & drug addiction.
